When did you start reenacting?
When did you become a member of Comites Feroces? Seeing as I was a founding member of Comites Feroces and being the “vice-president” ever since, I would answer both questions with 2017. We first started as group of guys with a strong urge for sword-fighting, which I already enjoyed to do as a kid. Later on, while studying archaeology, I found like-minded friends willing to hit each other with swords. All the reenacting and living history aspects came later on.
(David of 2017 would have likely reconsidered this whole endeavour had he known just how much sewing was involved in this hobby haha)
Why did you start reenacting? Besides the urge for fighting (as stated above), it was mainly a result of visiting medieval fairs and festivals as an archaeologist and wanting to be part of this. Initially, I wanted to keep it low-effort and not cater to strict and sometimes abstract “authenticity standards” of different groups. Over time this changed and I really enjoyed (and still enjoy) doing research and evaluating sources. I also really like to reconstruct and combine certain styles and outfits, be they military or civilian.

Reenactment for me combines camping, fighting, looking at sources for hours and hours with getting to spend a lot of quality time with friends and like-minded people. What a great pastime, isn’t it?
Who/what do you portray? While I could easily portray a peasant-militiaman, I rarely do so. My main focus lies on portraying a man-at-arms, as he is far better equipped for the kind of fighting that you get to experience in reenactment. I am also trying to improve this setup so that it might befit a knight as well. (I love those shiny knightly girdles). If we have to explain the story of our camp and its composition, I portray the knight and the rest constitutes my retinue.

Wann hast du mit Reenactment angefangen? Wann bist du Comites Feroces beigetreten? Ich habe gleichzeitig mit meinem Beitritt zu Comites Feroces im Juli 2024 mit Reenactment begonnen.
Warum das frühe 15. Jahrhundert? Ich finde, viele Epochen des Mittelalters haben ihren eigenen Reiz, aber insbesondere das späte 14./frühe 15. Jahrhundert besticht, was die Kleidung betrifft, durch eine subtile Schönheit, die mir besonders gut gefällt. Sie ist detailliert genug, um weder zu schlicht noch zu bombastisch zu wirken.
Außerdem stand Europa zu dieser Zeit am Rande großer gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen, z.B. durch die aufkommenden Fortschritte in der Theologie und der bildenden Künste.
